Measurement and Evaluation in the Teaching and learning Process

Measurement and Evaluation in Education sector is very important on wide spectrum across the board.
They provide information needed in overall education planning.The data from measurement and evaluation enables government administration to decide how many schools to be build in a country,province,district or community.
Decisions on instructional aims ,units,grades or marks enables teachers and school administrators to determine the extent to which pupils are growing towards the desired goals of the community for promotional reporting to parents and other stakeholders for the ability of their children are based on measurement and evaluation.
Through measurement and evaluation a teacher can diagonise the strength and weakness of pupils and takes a progress or remedial action thus by using measurement and evaluation ,a teacher can establish that Wyne is not performing to his potential capacity in a number of areas and Endy has problem in reading fluently.
Measurement and evaluation lead to the improvement of both instruction and the learning situation.The teacher through which results of pupils' performance ,identify areas of difficulties and plan ways of overcoming these difficulties.
According to Tackleman (1998:322)evaluation is ,"the means of determining whether the programme is meeting its goals ."The goals are given set of instructional inputs matches the intended or prescribed outcomes.
Whilst Piero and Lober (1990:145)view evalution as a,"means for determination what need improvement and providing a basis for effecting that improvement .It has to do with value judgement ,where data are gathered and combined in relation to a weighted set of goals of scales which allow people to make judgement about worth."
Therefore evaluation is in the form of formative and summative.For us to take evaluation reliably and more effectively we need first to take certain measurements and give our own judgements based on these data collected.
In this lets identify measurements in learning and teaching.Measurement is the assessing a learners piece of work and testing is assessing tool.It is a process of assessing certain qualities or collecting data about something ,for example scores in a test.In measurement we merely find out what is the situation without passing judgement and it involves quantitative and qualitative description of marks ,for instance 70%.
Measurement allows a more precise description of pupils' performance .Unlike in evaluative terms of performance of difference pupils may be stated as fairly good.
In measurement Madeleine 82% and Claid 60% the numerical scores enable us to be more precise in describing the two pupils performance.
These numerical scores enable us to use mathematical methods to analyse pupils' performance and thus constructing norms and make statistical predictions of pupils' future performance.
Measurements allows us to us to easily communicate children's results to their parents and other interested parties.
Usually when the teacher give pupils tests and come up with a score for each pupil.The scores are based on how well the pupils perform with respect to a definite set of standards ,established by the teachers.Teachers use a marking guide to come up with accurate scores.This process reduces subjectivity in evaluating pupils' performance.
Measurements are more economical than subjectivity and evaluation.
